MDT Flat File Access Procedures

The MDT environment is a read only environment containing secure data. This document assumes that the client has authorization to access to the data and that the appropriate permissions have been granted by AITS Security. The client must use SSH, a secure FTP client, to transfer the data to his local machine. The SSH program is available for free at the following locations depending on the campus of the user:

Once the client has installed SSH the steps for accessing data are as follows:

  • Start the SSH Secure File Transfer Client. This can be done in a variety of ways and is shown here using the Programs Menu from the Windows Start Button.

  • Once the Secure File Transfer Client has opened, a connection must be established with the MDT environment. This can be done through menu system by selecting "File" and then "Quick Connect" or by clicking on the Quick Connect button as shown below.

  • The Connect to Remote Host window will appear. Enter the data from the picture below substituting your netid and press the Connect button.

  • The Enter Password dialog box should appear. Enter the Irprod/Unix password, provided to you by AITS Security, and the press the OK button.

  • The user should now be connected to their home directory and the status should say "Connected to irprod.admin.uillinois.edu". SSH should prompt the user to add the connection to a profile that would allow future connections to be completed without having to re-enter the connection information.

  • The next step is to use change the directory. From the Operation menu, select the Go to Folder menu item as shown below.

  • The Go to Folder dialog box should appear. Enter "/mdt" as shown below and press the OK button.

  • You should now be in the MDT directory. You will be able to see applications that you don't have access to but you won't be able to see or access the files in those folders you don't have permissions to.

  • Double click the folder corresponding to the legacy application that was the source of the data you are accessing. As shown below, you will see the list of files stored in that folder including the file format and the size of the file in bytes.

  • Select the file or files you wish to transfer to your local machine

  • When all the desired files have been selected, click the download button as shown in the picture below.

  • Specify the local directory and click the download button again.

  • A download progress window will display the status of the file transfer. This window will disappear automatically when the file transfer process is complete.

  • When you have completed transferring all the files you need, close the connection to the MDT environment using the File menu or the Disconnect button shown below. Once you have closed the connection you can close the Secure File Transfer Client.

  • On your local machine, navigate to the folder location you specified and unzip the file using WinZip or the zip functionality built into Windows XP.
